When you think of Paris, most people would picture romantic candlelit dinners on the Seine, climbing the Eiffel tower and seeing the famed Moulin Rouge – but the city can offer so much more, and is actually home to some unusual and fantastic tourist activities.
Sewer museum and the catacombs. It may sound disgusting, but the Paris sewer system is fascinating – very few hundred years a new system, or layer was built on top of or around the previous one, so nowadays, there are hundreds of winding pathways – and even a legend about hidden treasure. The Catacomb area of the sewer is lined with thousands of human skeletons, all arranged and designed into fancy shapes and styles.
Fragonard Museum. This is the museum of perfume – take an amazing tour of this museum, and learn how scents are extracted and then mixed into amazing potions. Even the scent of individual humans can be extracted and added to a perfume.
Gourmet Markets. In the Marais district, there are delicious little gourmet food markets tucked away in alleys and behind shopping districts. These shopping districts are also famous for keeping their original shop fronts from the 19th century – so that Boulangerie sign may in fact be a clothing boutique!
You can still have your romantic Paris – Paris holiday apartments with a view of the Eiffel tower, a glass of red wine and a cheese platter for dinner, but don’t forget; you are in Europe! Make time to see the fantastic, weird and wonderful things this great city has to offer.
